Byzantine studies emerged as an independent discipline in the West in the 19th century and gained importance in Turkey due to its historical ties to the Byzantine Empire. Despite initial Western influence, studies of the Byzantine Period in the Ottoman Empire began in the 19th century, and significant developments took place in the field throughout the 20th century. By the early 21st century, Byzantine studies in Turkey achieved international recognition. The Sixth International Sevgi Gönül Byzantine Studies Symposium, held in 2023, aims to evaluate the growth of Byzantine studies in Turkey over the past century. The symposium explores the historical development, current state, and future prospects of Byzantine studies, including the role of educational institutions, archaeological studies, and cultural heritage.
