Basim Magdy’s third solo show at artSümer presents two films and a selection from his new photographic series Someone tried to lock up time. Drawing on history, Magdy creates fictional scenarios and facsimiles of current events, drawing attention to the cyclical nature of narratives. He utilises household chemicals to warp film and create new and unexpected colour palettes, resulting in a reality that is both familiar and foreign.
The visual puzzles Magdy creates can be confusing and captivating, oscillating between disenchantment with failed utopian ideas, nostalgia of childhood pictures and a cool dispassion for the humankind’s ruins.
