For this concert, the Istanbul State Symphony Orchestra is to be conducted by Nicolò Umberto Foron, assistant conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra. The first item in the programme will be the Overture to Wagner’s 1845 opera Tannhäuser. This will be followed by Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No 1, written when the composer was still a teenager; the soloist in this performance will be the Russian pianist Alexei Volodin. In the second half, the orchestra will play Schubert’s four-movement Symphony No 5 in B flat major, D 485, written in 1816. This work shows the influence of Mozart, especially with regard to its light instrumentation, which is the same as that Mozart used for his Symphony No 40.
