Another triumph for the SSM. This is a major show of an important German contemporary painter, printmaker and sculptor, featuring no fewer than 100 large-scale canvases. In a parallel show Akbank Sanat is showing the artist’s engravings. Baselitz’s stance between abstraction and figurative art helped to forge a new identity in German art after the Second World War, and many of the old themes are still in evidence, eagles, deer and upside-down portraits of his wife Elke.
