La Cetra Barockorchester Basel is the brainchild of Sergey Malov, a teacher of the violin in Zurich who plays a number of baroque stringed instruments. The ensemble, named after Vivaldi’s La Cetra series of concertos for two solo violins, string orchestra and basso continuo, specialises in Italian music of the baroque period.
In addition to three works by Vivaldi – his Violin Concerto in A minor (RV 356), his Sinfonia in G minor (RV 156) and his Concerto No 9 in B flat major (RV 530) from the La Cetra set – they are scheduled to play works by Arcangelo Corelli (his Concerto Grosso in D major, Op. 6 No. 4), Nicolo Porpora (one of Joseph Haydn’s early mentors) and Luigi Boccherini.
