Süleyman, the ruler of the Ottoman Empire from 1520 to 1566, had a complex life, leading a multilingual and multireligious empire. He faced rivalries with the Catholic Habsburgs and the Shiite Safavids while promising peace to his subjects. The lecture will discuss his life and legacy, focusing on his achievements and failures, and the world he lived in. Kaya Şahin, the author of the first scholarly biography of Süleyman in English since 1944, will lead the discussion.
