This comprehensive and complex exhibition at DEPO highlights the multisensory experience of pilgrimage, as seen through the lens of the three major Abrahamic religions. Geographically, the exhibition covers locations throughout the Middle East and Mediterranean, a vast territory that spans from France to Morocco to Turkey to Egypt. Through the work of many artists, Shared Sacred Spaces posits that cross-cultural coexistence is a way forward out of the essentialism and isolationism that has often come to characterise today’s discourse.
Work in the exhibition includes contemporary art, photography, ethnographic material and digital media and draws on years of anthropological and historical research.
