Book Description

Ayşe Erkmen’s art has been described as a commentary on minimalism, industrial form and the body, a description particularly evident in the 2022 Venice Biennale, where the Istanbul artist’s sculptural installation “Plan B”, has been in the Arsenale. It draws on Venice’s complex relationship with water, something she would know well from her own life close to the water’s edge on the Bosphorus.

This 2019 catalogue raisonée of this important conceptual artist was a collaboration between the German publisher, Dirimart and Istanbul art-book publisher Norgunk.

The book explores Erkmen’s work thematically, rather the chronoligically. The 500 plus illustrations are combined fragments of text and conversation from the artist herself and a veritable who’s who of curators, artists and authors: Bettina Schaschke, Andrea Schlieker, Jan Verwoert, Fatoş Üstek, Julian Heynen, Kassandra Nakas, Başak Şenova, Frédéric Bußmann, Elizabeth Youngman, H. G. Masters, Emre Baykal, Fulya Erdemci, Friedrich Meschede, Fatih Özgüven, Fremde Ufer, Vanessa Joan Müller, Gregory Volk, Özlem Altunok, Danae Mossman, the Hamburg-based Brigitte Kölle, Britta Schmitz, Dieter Buchhart, Catrin Lorch, Beatrice von Bismarck, Erman Ata Uncu, Necmi Sönmez, Hans-Jürgen Schwalm, Daniel Birnbaum, Berin Gölönü, Konrad Bitterli (Kunstmuseum St. Gallen), Jean-Christophe Ammann, Sally Ann McIntyre, Nikola Dietrich, Julian Heynen, Mark Prince, Sarah Hopkinson, Cem Erciyes, Clara Tang, Gökcan Demirkazık, Naz Kocadere, Melih Görgün and Jan Verwoert
