The Zeyrek is in a sad state these days, the professional restoration curtailed, a renovation put out to tender, and (unless things have changed recently) a surly bearded fellow inside the door, who heaps calumny on the men and women who dedicated a decade to rescuing the building. But it is worth braving his ill temper. And you can nurse your wounds over a proper lunch at the Divan’s excellent Zeyrekhane Restaurant next door.
